A.J. Hawk: Clay Matthews Gives Our Defense a New Dimenson

Green Bay Packers linebacker A.J. Hawk joined Fox Sports Radio and former Packers linebacker Brady Poppinga in the aftermath of Sunday's 53-20 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles.

Hawk's comments on the move to Clay Matthews at inside linebacker are particularly interesting.

"The greatest thing that it's done for us is it's kind of given our defense a dimenson," said Hawk. "Brady knows, everyone that plays football knows, the more deceptive you can be as a defense, the better you're going to do. The offense doesn't really know where guys are going to line up. It's great. Sometimes he's in the middle. Sometimes he's off the edge rushing. Sometimes him and Julius (Peppers) are both in the middle rushing. So we can do all kinds of things with our scheme right now."

The move to the middle with Clay was overdue. Three weeks ago when I checked the stats the move had to happen. In the first eight weeks Clay had a total of 14 tackles. His first week in the middle Clay had 11 tackles. I don't expect to hear any negative comments from anyone with the move. A super decision.

Unless it is Reggie White ,LT , a player so dominant in one area that it is pointless to move them around, you want your best most athletic player in a position to affect the game as much as possible. Historically that meant MLB. This is what we are seeing , and it happens to be an area we need it the most, Now they can focus on getting more ,faster and stronger LBs. Try some of the young guys until next years draft.

When Clay is at ILB it is SO OBVIOUS that he is so much more athletic, violent, instinctive, (heck, so much more EVERYTHING) than anyone else the Packers have at that position.
I'd like to see GB add a quality defensive lineman (rather than an ILB so they can move Mattews back outside.)
However, I'll Just take the best 11 defensive players and let the coaches sort them out and line them up.
