A Note On the Offense\'s Struggles

I've seen a lot of chatter both here at CHTV and around the Packer Blogosphere about the reports coming out of camp that all seem to indicate that the defense has looked decidedly better than the offense, in fact, if the reporting is to be believed, the offense has looked downright bad. (Ryan Grant even admitted the defense took it to them yesterday.)

There are a few reasons for this.

First, every NFL offense starts slower than its defensive counterpart at the beginning of training camp. It's just a fact of life in the NFL. The nature of their respective MO's causes this. The offense is much more dependant on all 11 players acting in concert while the defense as a whole is allowed to react and allow their athletic abilty to come to the fore much more. This is also why a lot of offenses are so brutal to watch early in the preseason.

Secondly, and this might come as a surprise to some, the defense has more raw talent on their side of the ball. That might seem odd after the stellar statistical year the offense had last year, but in my opinion it's not even a question. Yes, on the offensive side of the ball you have a very deep WR corps and an up and comming young quarterback. But you also have a stable of decidedly underwhelming backs (though Wynn seems to be making some noise) along with an incredibly uneven offensive line. Throw in absolutely nothing special at tight end and fullback and it's a knockout when compared to the talent on display over on the defensive side of the ball.

Now, does some of that talent on offense project? Of course. Finley is a ball of potential, along with guys like Quinn Johnson and TJ Lang. But as of right now, they are all young and grinding away at becoming NFL players. When you look over at the defense, you have guys like Woodson and Harris in front of an up and coming talent in Williams and an improving Pat Lee. You have Cullen Jenkins and Ryan Pickett in front of an improving Justin Harrell. And the linebacking corps is brimming with talent, if the coaches have the guts to play the best players.

So have no fear Packer fans. The offense will get it's act together. Give them some time to solidify the line and get preseason under their belt and they'll be good to go. McCarthy is too good an offensive coach to believe otherwise. And don't forget the brutal offensive showings we saw last preseason, there are more of those to come, I guarantee it. But have no doubt, they'll be a force to be reckoned with opening night against the Bears.

Being the 2nd day of real practice, I wouldn't worry about the offense just yet. However, if you read Bedard's run down on the 2 minute offense and the Red Zone offense, you'll see a surprising number of defensive rushes that would have been sacks. That is bothersome. Too soon to panic, certainly, but not too soon to be concerned.

Aaron, I'd like to ask you an offensive line question. Over the past two years, I've read conflicting things about the O-line. I keep reading that the players are talented but inexperienced. I've read that as late as this month. Two years ago, they looked very good, but the schedule was fairly easy and we didn't beat the Cowboys, who looked like the NFC team to beat. Then last year our O-line sucked, but the line was plagued with injuries, so maybe it doesn't mean anything. I'd like to believe that we were just unlucky with injuries last year. But I have to admit that deep in my gut, I just don't like the whole cut-blocking, "use smaller, faster guys for flexibility" approach. My natural faith is in beefy guys who destroy all in their path. I remember how the Saints offense looked against us last year and I can't help but think that maybe we're going down the wrong road.
What do you make of our offensive line situation?

Sorry, Grammar Cop is here:

1st paragraph reads:

"I’ve seen a lot of chatter both here at CHTV and around the Packer Blogosphere about the reports coming out of camp that all seem to indicate that the defense has looked decidedly better than the offense, in fact, if the reporting is to be believed, the offense has looked downright bad. (Ryan Grant even admitted the defense took it to them yesterday.)"

I think you need a "period" after "offense" in the fourth sentence. "In fact......" would start a new sentence.

"The offense will get it’s act together."

"Its" is correct.
