A healthy Perry is a force to be reckoned with

Nick Perry's success shouldn't come as a surprise -- his only problem was he couldn't stay healthy.

It’s Friday, so if you’ve paid any attention to the Packers in the past 24 hours you know that Green Bay has reserved the rights to five more years of former first-round pick, Nick Perry.

The former USC standout defensive end, a first-round pick in 2012, has spent most of his career associated with “bust”. Perry’s first four seasons were mired by injury, as he missed significant time in his rookie year, suited up for only 11 games in year two, and, despite appearing in action for the majority of 2014 and ’15, he missed almost the entirety of the offseason with shoulder injuries.

When you’re a first-round selection, plugged into a position as important as outside linebacker in a 3-4 scheme, expectations for your success are understandably high. There just wasn’t enough there to see what Perry was made of.

It had been asserted that Perry’s struggles derived from a position change from 4-3 defensive end to stand-up linebacker in Dom Capers’ 3-4 defense. Under the best circumstances, like Perry avoiding the injury bug and getting significant playing time, he’d still need to adjust to a new position.

But there were always reasons to believe in Perry. He was a productive pass rusher at USC. His combine numbers were obvious cause for elation: a 4.58 40-yard-dash, a 38-inch vertical, and 35 reps on the bench press. Look at the same pool of players selected in 2012, and you’ll note Perry running a faster 40 and posting a higher vertical than wide receivers, while making the big guys in the trenches look weak by comparison. And all of this came wrapped up in a 270-pound frame.

The scouting report on Perry in college was that he relied on raw athleticism over technique. His limited time early on in Green Bay displayed a nasty bull rush. Perry is a player for whom the combination of speed and power has always been obvious and dangerous once properly mobilized. But the impact plays were few and far between, despite flashes, like a monster hit against Andrew Luck early on in his career that was erroneously flagged for a personal foul largely because of the play’s impressive violence.

Every flash Perry showed in his first four years was offset by injury woes. Availability and accountability.

The Packers weren’t ready to give up on their former first-rounder, though, and signed Perry to a one-year “prove it” contract entering 2016.

Perry, finally the beneficiary of a clean bill of health, was a full participant in the offseason programs. This gave assistant head coach/linebackers coach Winston Moss considerably more time to work with Perry. The Packers were pleased to have their elephant in the room.

Since the 2014 season, Capers, in an attempt by the entire staff to better use players to their strengths, began employing the “elephant” position in the team’s sub-packages (in which they play the majority of snaps). This shift would give tweeners like Perry and Peppers a position that played more to their strengths. Traditionally an outside linebacker lines up on the inside shoulder of the tackle. The elephant position moves further out, lining up on the inside shoulder of the tight end.

Perry always had a bull rush, as well as the size and strength to set the edge. Last season he showed what he was capable of.

There’s the team-leading 11 sacks — despite missing two games with a broken hand — and the fact that Perry remained productive while wearing the club. Moreover, Perry was one the league’s very best in setting the edge against the run. He destroyed tight ends and made life difficult for tackles, ripping and powering through blocks. He was arguably the Packers’ best defensive player.

There aren’t many keys to Perry’s continued success. He just has to stay healthy. Whether that happens is a big if, but don’t doubt for a second that the Packers needed to bring him back. Perry’s services were highly-sought, for good reason, because his value isn’t just as a pass-rusher. He’s an all-around disrupter.

It’s incredibly rare for a player to break out in his fifth season, but Perry’s previous struggles make sense. He’s now settled into a position that plays to his strengths. And he’s entering what should be his prime.

He just has to stay on the field. Bringing him back is a risk, but one no doubt worth taking.

It's not just about him staying on the field,it's the number of games he can give you 100%. He always seems to be playing with a club, brace, cast, etc. Or sitting out practice because he's dinged up. That's why I'm not high on this contract.

Ok great he's back , let's move on to other developments like loosing Hyde, Cook, Lacy , Tretter etc ..,,,if no improvements then if I was Rodgers I would hold out until a new deal is worked out since Ted Thompson expects him to do it all .

Yea I'm happy Perry is back but enough stories about Perry. But I know with TT not doing squat on the non packer free agent front there isn't much else to discuss I guess.

That's right. I wonder how much TT is paying Martellus Bennett, who had better numbers than Cook last season.

And Aaron Rodgers seems pleased with the signing of Bennett because he immediately posted on Twitter an image of a fist bump with his “relax” catch phrase.

Holding out for losing the likes of Lacy and Hyde? Get real. This draft is deep with RBs. Why would anyone hold out for a RB who has a history of injury and conditioning issues? Especially with a draft that's full of quality RBs.

Tretter? He's good, but also has had injury issues. Not worth sitting out for a guy who couldn't break the starting line up unless someone got injured.

Hyde? He's an average player. Sure he made a couple plays on a below average defense. He's also slow and got burned quite a bit. This draft is loaded with CBs. Should be able to find a decent replacement.

Get a grip.

I have a question. What to do with Datone Jones? Do you bring him back on a one year deal the way you did Perry? Kind of a different circumstance though because he plays D line most of the time now, and that position group has its own set of depth issues and what now now...and after having played a number of different techs, 2 pt stance and 3 pt stance..I wonder what his future holds now

Nick Perry graded out as one of the top OLB'rs that play 3-4 in the entire NFL. I said this on the site when everyone was saying he was "gone". I don't think you know what you're talking about as it pertains to Perry. His metrics cannot be taught and he is a very good all around OLB when healthy. Who's going to take his place, scrawny azz Fackrel who weighs about 30lbs less and can only speed rush?! Lol. No, I don't think so. Perry is a solid piece to the front 7 and they certainly didn't have a replacement on the roster. He got more money than I had anticipated but there was no question in my mind that GB would retain him. Let's try to be positive and move on.

I would notice. He wanted to come back to Green bay. Why give up on him. Everyone said he would be a good DE. And then their moving him to Lb. I trust him more then Guion per contract. As long as TT signed Perry . I say sign his team mate. The market has shown the price for packers has gone up. Why give up a guy that belongs here. The problem was the secondary. Elliott and several others never stepped up. Jones will never be a super -star. But how many of TTs picks will take his place. None. I'll tell you another thing. If TT can't sign his players, He better start {trading} them before they become Free Agents . Or just retire, and get some fresh thinking that can.

'So far the Packers are considerably worse on both sides of the ball since the NFCCG.'

Eh, maybe. I guess. We're 36 hours into FA. What were you expecting?

Resigned our best pass rusher. When you posted this we had potentially lost a FA guard and TE on offense. Neither of whom has signed with another team yet. For all we know Ted might have been determined to get both, but just wanted to make sure he wasn't overpaying. Let them shop around, but get them in the end. This might still be the case for Lang. (We now know he had a trick up his sleeve with Bennett.)

As for the defense, nobody knows how well this defense will play next year. To say it's 'considerably' worse is extremely premature to the point where it shouldn't be said. Randall, Rollins, Gunter, Hawkins, Clark, Ryan, Brice, Lowry, and Martinez have all played less than two years. Do you really think all nine will not improve next year? I find that hard to believe.

And this doesn't include a draft class loaded at the pass rusher/CB positions. I'm sure TT will pick up a few good ones there too.

You have it right holding off on final judgement until later in the year, but don't just limit it to FA and draft. 'Draft and develop' means expecting some of the younger players to develop from one year to the next.

That's why I also said I'll wait till June to react. Losing Tretter and possibly Lang IS scary thought through. Langs brings so much more to the Packers than just being a great Guard.

I see nothing wrong with keeping an internal balance as to whether we are better or worse. I wouldn't get all worked up over it until TC arrives.

Defense: So far, we are worse.
Retained Perry. Status quo.
Lost Hyde, Peppers.

Offense: So far, probably a bit worse
Bennett > Cook by a modest amount.
Lost Tretter, who was a solid starter when healthy

Spot on TGR.

If we compare the roster as of now to the end of the season, this is a weaker team. However, as we know, there's a lot of time left. Free agency just started, the drafts coming up and they'll be a number of other dispositions and acquisitions as we go along. Spotrac has us with around $27 to $29 mil of cap space left even after the Bennett signing.

It'll be interesting to compare the 2017 roster to the end of the year 2016 roster, but that won't come until September,

Another guy who loved it here who wanted to stay and certainly doesn't need the money. I'm sure he would have stayed for a 2 year deal/ 6 million and retired as a Packer. He probably bailed because he sees the shit show that is unfolding and knew that the organization is not committed to winning a SB anytime soon?! SMH. Another TT failure. Reminds me of how the Bears treated Urlacher. Completely inexcusable and again, other than Perry...no better OLB on the roster, despite his age.Oh well Ted, go back to playing with your blocks.

Really, like CMIII?! Lol. That guy is probably the most overpaid pass rusher compared to production in the entire NFL! Aside from his admirable ILB experiment 2 seasons ago, he's been almost invisible and is also hurt at least a quarter of the season EVERY YEAR! Let's not create double standards for one guy vs the other. Perry's market was set and the other teams had no reason to over pay him. I think they are aware of Perry's metrics & skill set. It's done, let's focus on the disaster that is the rest of the defense. SMH.

I wouldn't doubt it if they cut Clay next year, or even before the opener this year.

I'm used to banging my head against the wall at this time of year but it's time for Murphy to intervene. TT appears vacant and barely able to speak a complete sentence. It appears that he has a variant of advancing dementia, perhaps from CTE. As sad as that is, someone needs to take the reigns, seriously! GB stopped talking to Cook?! WTF?! He wanted to stay, Rodgers wanted him to stay, and MM wanted him to stay. TT has way too much unbalanced power in GB. Move him to scouting and get another GM in there before the whole team is dismantled! The Packers have gotten markedly worse on paper over the last few days and the draft WILL NOT fix that for 2 years if at all. Something is very wrong in GB. If Rodgers decides to squeeze them, it could get really ugly.

This isn't meant to be a bash Ted post, but I wonder if what Holmes says isn't true. Is TT suffering from the effects of aging combined with head trauma he may have sustained as a player? It certainly wouldn't be out of the ordinary. And if so, Murphy needs to step in and let him know he needs to move on to another position in the organization.

Never a loquacious speaker, Ted's speech pattern has become more garbled and muddled throughout his tenure. I read recently someone within the organization says he's still very sharp and aware on evaluations, but you have to wonder how often his underlings swim in the opposite discretion.

Not a diagnosis? You start by questioning his mental state and smearing him with 'vacant','barely able to complete a sentence', and 'advancing dementia'. And then you segue into firing him from his job. Sounds like you've already rendered your verdict on TT.

Turns out Ted made one of shrewdest moves in the first couple days of free agency by signing a top drawer TE for less money than what Cook was asking for. You must be amazed that someone who can barely spit out a coherent sentence was able to pull that off.

No one's "disrespecting" Ted. It's just an observation after listening to him for nearly a dozen years. He was never a great orator, but over the years it's becoming harder and harder to listen to him. It's not just me noticing this but just about anyone else I'm watching with. And it's not just his drawl.

If his acuity has waned over the years it's nothing to be ashamed of. The brain is just another part of body, subject to the vulgarities of the aging process. A former player, taking multiple shots over a ten year career might be even more susceptible.

Don't know how how sharp Ted really is. Neither do you. All I know is what I hear in his infrequent interviews. If I see a person limping, I can assume somethings wrong with his leg. Same with this.

If the organizations most important person has lost his ability to judge then it's in everyone's best interest to move on. If you read my posts from years ago, you'd find many championing Ted, I have a great appreciation for what he's done for GB.

If you're watching a Packer game and lets say Damarious Randall is getting torched all over the place, it's OK to declare he's playing poorly. It's not necessarily a statement against his character(all though it could be), but an observation.

You, me and everyone make trillions of observations over a lifetime. Sometimes those lead to judgements. Despite what you might think, acumen is essential for the well-being of creatures that rely on their brains as anything else.

The Doc was just making a declaration based on years of observation in the medical field. I would say his expert opinion is much more valid than yours, And from what I read, none of his elocution was mean spirited or ill-willed, Just the opposite. Instead you poorly judged and insulted him, playing the sensitivity card. Due to your callous and misinformed attack on the Doc, I think you owe him an apology.

I'll descalate this a little and concede I don't think you or the Doc meant to be mean spirited. But I still maintain it was in poor taste.

Your Randall example is not an apt comparison. We are greatly exposed to the on-the-field performance of players during the season. Replays, post game analyses, online data, All 22 access, expert commentary...it's a solid stream of information from which one can make a competent assessment of a player's performance over the course of a year.

Now if Doc is TT's personal physician and has examined Ted's medical history, intimately observed his behavior over the years beyond an annual press conference, and analyzed his medical tests then I'll give credence to the Doc's medical assessment of Ted and offer an apology. However, if he did not have access to this information then I maintain alluding to dementia and calling for his demotion because of it was an unprofessional thing to do.

I stand by my critique.

Good day.

Nothing all that unusual for Packers off-season so far. It is day 2 of free agency and one big contract and a couple of small things done so far this off-season.

More than $30 million in cap room still available. Is TT developing dementia? Maybe. But it ain't over until much of that $30 mill has been spent.

I live near Buffalo and they are talking on their sports radio channel like Hyde is a Pro Bowl DB!? Anyone who follows the Packers think that? Anyone here think TT should have paid Hyde 6/18 over next three years?

Bills lost free agent CB Gilmore who was pretty good. But at $14 million he better be Richard Sherman good. Would I prefer him to the garbage the Packers have at CB? Sure, but his cap hit for the next few years is very risky.

I wish the Pack had locked up J. Cook by now and so far that's my only concern. Does the team have many holes to fill? Of course. Calm down until we see how the next $30 million is spent.

I'd be much more excited about the Perry signing if we were adding him to an already impressive defensive front. But all we've done is hold serve. And that's not even really the case. He's getting more than twice what he did last year. Heavily front-loaded contract to boot, so once the check clears you're banking on his professionalism and pride to put forth the effort worthy of that kind of cash. We get back the same player we had last year, but get to pay him lots more without much of a money incentive for him to go all-out. Yeeeehaaaaa.

We've already lost Peppers and Hyde along with Guion suspended for the first four games if he's even in the teams plans next year. They've also cut Elliot. Now I'm all for a reshuffling of the deck after the crappy performance last year, but they're going to at least need some warm bodies to fill the roster. And we might need to restock on offense too, especially if Cook leaves, so it's not like Ted can go all in on the defense in the draft.

Restock an offense? Did we cut Nelson, Cobb, Bulaga, Bahktiari, Lindsley, Rip, AR, Allison, Adams, and Taylor? Who did Lacy sign with?

(I'll concede you didn't know about Bennett when you posted, but Cook still hasn't signed with anyone yet either.)

Defense has a lot of young players with upside plus an upcoming draft tailor made for GB's needs at pass rusher and CB. Make sure you overlook and discount those.

I think he's guaranteed nearly $21 mil in the first year of the contract, That's over 1/3 of the total value of the 5 year deal, That alone is enough to hang up the cleats if he gets tired of the pounding,

Cash in hand isn't the same as front or back loaded. Almost all of the guaranteed money is conveyed immediately to Perry via a signing bonus. But for cap purposes, the guaranteed money from the signing bonus is spread evenly over the life of the contract, and so by definition it isn't front of back loaded. Perry still has significant dead money in year 5 ($3.7M) and $7.4M dead to cut him prior to his 4th year.

You are spot on though, he gets almost $21M in 2017 ($20.8M), and that is a third of the contract. Even after taxes, he can live comfortably on that.

There's enough in base salary and roster bonuses in the middle years of that deal to make it something for him to play for...

But, didn't another article here have many saying how Cook made Rodgers b..b..b..better. I guess Thompson had some imput from Rodgers to the opposite thinking and why he, Cook, is now looking for a team with QB to blame whike looking b...b...b....bad again. : )

Better blocker than Cook, very good receiver. Hopefully his head is on straight.

Piece by piece...gotta see the contract specs, but Bennett is a step in the right direction.

I'm still pissed he got flagged for roughing Luck. It's been 3-4 years. I guess I'm not getting over it.
