A Bit of Perspective

Some fans have expressed reservations over the latest Packer Anthony Smith due to his infamous guarantee against the Patriots two years ago. At the same time, I see comments and posts around the blogosphere about what a good pickup Kevin Carter would be because of his good attitude and veteran leadership. (Which, indeed, it would be for those and other reasons). What people are forgetting is how Carter was perceived when he left the Rams in free agency several years ago, which, to put it charitably, was as a selfish punk who only cared about himself and his sack numbers. Now, he is glowingly described as caring more about the team than himself.

Anthony Smith is immature and he made a dumb decision two years ago. But he is a gifted athlete who is entering the prime of his career. He is being given a new start with a position coach in Darren Perry who knows exactly what is needed to make this kid a solid pro. Smith is an excellent pick up and my hunch is that he will take this 'second chance' and run with it. I would not be surprised to see a Kevin Carter-type reversal of attitude the longer he is in the league and realizes what is important.
