Confessions of a Polluted Mindset - A Thanksgiving Story

The Weekly Packers Brain Drain from Jersey Al.

It's hard enough to come up with original game commentary on a Wednesday after a Sunday game. Pretty much everything has already been said and I hate repetition (ask my wife how much i like being asked the same question twice). Add a few more days of media saturation with a Thursday game, and it's pretty much impossible. So I'm going to try something different today and tell you about how my Thanksgiving game-watching went.

Truth be told, my realistic and logical self had little faith that the Packers could win this game. Sure, anything is possible in the NFL, but the Lions were 8-2, had physically beat up on the Packers previously and the game was in Detroit. The Packers also had 17 players on their injured list during the week and were missing some of their most important players. The Lions had but one player on the injured list. What was I supposed to think?

With the odds stacked clearly against the Packers, I had resigned myself to a not too pleasant game-watching experience. As such, I didn't sweat the fact that our Thanksgiving celebration was set to start at my brother-in-law's house 20+ minutes away in what would likely be the middle of the second half. No worries, I would just watch what I could and DVR the game for a more focused watch later on.

My wife was leaving to visit her mom and we agreed that she would just go straight to her brother's house since it was only five minutes away from where she would be. I was instructed to be sure I bring with me the three side dishes she had made (mashed potatoes, sweet potato casserole and broccoli rabe). I was also responsible for picking out and bringing a couple of "extra nice" bottles of wine. Having received my marching orders, I picked out my wines, opened them to let them breathe a bit and sat down to watch the beginning of the game.

To my surprise, the Packers actually scored first and everything was continuing to go their way. What I was seeing had me ecstatic and frankly, a little confused, as these tweets will attest to:

As the first quarter ended, I started to feel some panic setting in - I was not prepared for this at al. I just can't allow myself to miss a live play of this game!  So the wheels started to turn. How can I get to my brother-in-law's house without missing anything? Obviously the only chance was to leave at half time, but I'll need more help than that. First, i called my sister-in-law and asked if it was ok if I came over a little sooner than I had planned. Sensing why I was asking, she said sure, but I have to tell you that our TV is broken. Very funny, I said.

My next thought was that I needed to be absolutely ready to go when the half ended. So during commercial breaks, I changed my clothes, got my coat ready, re-corked the wines and loaded the wines and the side dishes into my car. When the half ended, I could be on the road in about 30 seconds. But I still had to figure out a way to shave some more minutes off the time it would take me to get there.

I always take local roads to his house, as it's the shortest and most pleasant route to take. But there is also a highway-centric route that while a few miles longer, would probably be quicker. A quick check of google maps confirmed that, but my overall odds of making it before the second half started were not good, much like the Packers' odds of beating Detroit at home with an injury-riddled team.

Anyway, the moment the Detroit player returning Carlson's failed last-second field goal attempt hit the ground (admit you were a little nervous how far he got). the remote clicked off, I threw on my coat and car keys and I was gone.

I earned my share of speeding tickets in my youth, but it's probably been over 25 years since my last one. Let's just say I tempted fate as I raced to my brother-in-law's house. As I pulled up to the house, my nephew was waiting at the front door and yelled. "hurry, you've got two minutes." We brought everything in from the car, I poured a glass of wine and hit the couch just as Carlson was preparing to kick off.

Much like the Packers on that day, I had beaten the odds. It was a glorious Thanksgiving.

Hope you had a good one too.

Go Pack!

I usually do not make comments about fantasy football, yes I do participate, but I will make an exception. I ate Thanksgiving meal at my daughter and son-in-law's house. I watched the game with my son and son-in-law and at times my daughter. My son-in-law is a Vikings fan, yes I know you work hard raising your kids right and what do they do they go off and marry a person that cheers for a team that wears purple pants. So my son-in-law had before we sat down to eat, it was lunch time, had decided to release Christian Watson from one of his fantasy teams. Oh you guessed right, you must have been there, I was commenting about every good play Watson made. Yes I am not a nice father-in-law and it makes it more fun when I am not nice to a Vikings fan.

LOL... If the man is a Vikings fan he DESERVES every bit of shit you give him! It doesn't matter if it's a relative or not. ALL fans of the Vikings, Bears, and Lions deserve anything & everything you can dish out.

Relation should have NOTHING to do with it. You want to cheer for a perennial LOSER, you deserve to get it from every angle!

Hopefully Watson keeps preforming like he did this past Thursday so you can continue to keep giving that gift to your son-in-law. The Vikings, Bears, and Lions are really that gift that keeps on giving!

My niece's husband is a Bears fan. Good guy, but was born and raised in the Chicago area and just can't help himself. The good news is I have played A LOT of golf on his dime because he just has to support his beloved Bears. Gotta love those Bears fans.....

So here is my take on the other Black and Blue teams. Oh the disclaimer: These comments only go for football not the rest of life.

Vikings fans I do not like them and I do not respect them. OK I like my son-in-law because he is a good guy but other fans sorry.

Bears fans I do not like them but I respect them. If the Packers dissolved I would become a Bears fan. That is because they are on of the original teams and a blue collar team and they play outside on grass.

Lions fans I like them and I respect them. These are fans that have stood by their team for over 60 years with little success.

One of the worst experiences I have had was at a Packers-Lions game in the Silverdome.

The fans were complete jerks...just because I was wearing my Packer gear. Profanities & shouting walking and and walking out. Two middle aged guys sitting behind my Father in Law, my young nephew and his young friend were dropping F bombs on us, insulting the Packers and Packer fan all through the first quarter. Constantly.

I turned to them and said "we are just here to enjoy the game...and please stop the profanity...we have young kids here". They got even worse.

I finally had to motion for a security/usher agent to come over and he told then he would kick them out if he had another complaint. They FINALLY shut up...just gave us an occasional bird.

I too want to read Packer/football content but the problem with this week is we get Taylor crap to weed through. Taylor it is cold in Green Bay at this time of year and there are no very expensive shopping venues so please find something else to do this weekend.

Yes, that was a fun read, Al. I was absolutely glued to the TV for the whole game, and redeemed myself slightly with my wife by helping with food prep during halftime. And luckily I baked pies first thing in the morning before the game started (9:30AM PST, here). This game was one of the most enjoyable games I’ve seen in quite some time. Can the Packers stun the Chiefs this weekend? I sure hope so. Go Packers Go!

I was resigned to missing the second half of the game this year due to our usual 1:00 Thanksgiving meal in a non-football-watching home. But the fates intervened in my favor. A couple weeks before Thanksgiving, at a meal in a restaurant, my mother-in-law put a question to the table: Should we have Thanksgiving dinner at the usual time, or later this year? Nobody said anything for a few seconds, so I piped up: How about having dinner later? Nobody objected, and the path was clear for me to watch the Packer game at home before going over there. I don't know if anyone even suspected why I made that suggestion. It was just about the only thing I said at dinner all night. Thanks to the Packers for making the game a worthwhile experience.

I read Tom Silverstein's game blog afterwards, and my favorite fan comment during the game was this one: "Lions should not have had a turkey dinner before the game."

My 5 year old son and I watched at my cousins house. Like a cave troll. By ourselves. On Thanksgiving. When everyone else was in the dining room talking. First on her TV via the Fox Sports App (she does not have an antenna). Then on my iPhone when that free hour preview was up. Then on my wife's iPhone when that free hour was up. And then on NFL.com boxscores for the last 3 minutes of the game. Fox Sports wanted me to pay $40 for one app for one month. Um. Nope.

And after all that, I was still happy. What a great day to be a Packers fan!

The boy and his wife came down south with their two girls.

The youngest (6) picked out the free (20+lb) turkey that my daughter-in-law received from her work.

She and her oldest daughter (A TEANAGER! Won't say any more about her.) insisted that they wanted to prep it for the family. They slept in till 9:30. Slam dunk for me in the Mountain time zone. The game started at 10:30 and there was no way the turkey was going to be done till after 4:00.

My only job was to fire up the Webber and slow cook the spiral ham for what worked out to be 2 hours and 20 min. Didn't have to start the coals till after the game. Perfect.

The only problem is that due to a tradition started before I was legally old enough to drink, I have to drink a beer after every Packer TD or noon whichever comes first, or I'll jinks the game. They may still lose if I do that, but at least it isn't on me. At least they slowed down their scoring in the 2nd half or I would have been passed out by 3:00.

Like many here I didn't think we had much of a chance to go into the Lion's den and slay that team. I was simply looking for a hard fought game and improvement. I was stunned as we took the game to them and outplayed them in the trenches. Much to be thankful for indeed.

I got to admit that I have called for coaching, front office and player changes as I watched this team flounder. Mistakes, poor fundamentals and nutty strategies have me questioning the intelligence of the Packer organization. I know it is one game but the team came ready to play and out competed a good opponent. Maybe I don't know what really goes into building a team from young and inexperienced players.

Two Things:
- Jordan Love is showing a lot of poise and skill at making this offense work. And, he is doing this without much of a ground game. That is pretty good. Please get the guy some ground support.

- Matt Lafleur please burn the two point conversion flea flicker play.

I think it is part of their game plan that they have to have one failed trick play in each game. At least they made up for it this time by stuffing that fake punt attempt. That was a thing of beauty. It would have been even more beautiful with the correct camera angle.

dobber, Fun Fact EVERYONE EXPECTED THE SPANISH INQUISITION in real life. They always gave notice weeks and months beforehand that they were coming! Saw that on the History Channel and immediately thought about those hilarious Monty Python sketches. I's also like to say, "And now for something completely different" pretty much described the Packer game from previous ones this season!

I was most perplexed about electing to receive the opening kickoff instead of deferring.

Must be MLF decided that if the Lions started out hot it could change the complexion of the game before the Packers got the ball.

Turned out to be a good plan. Have to give him that.

I always want the Packers to take the ball because the O is better than the D. Momentum is important in football and too often when the D starts and team stacks up first downs, goes down the field and earns either field position on a punt or score.

Then the O, after standing on the sideline for several minutes has start from inside the 10 or behind.

I never called for firing players.

I never expected any major coaching changes mid-season.

I still call for major changes ASAP, but it's gotta start with removing MM's silos and completely removing him from all football operations. Until that happens, the team is hamstrung. Once that is done, MM staying until planned retirement hurts what? Seems to me he'd be ok.

I'm not sure that either JB or MLF should be the #1 priority to replace. Do this and they might be ok?

Butkus has to go. Stenovitch was at least good as O line coach, no rush to replace Butkus. I think MLF might be better as OC than HC.

TE coach has never played TE. The room is doing better now, but ...

Strength and conditioning staff has been bad for years. Low risk to swap that out.

Vrable as WR coach ain't cutting it.

Defense is still playing beneath their ability as a whole on the season, and great effort by our pass rushers has no bearing on JB and whatever his staff is or isn't doing. At least he called for more than 2 down linemen on almost half the plays, and yes that made a difference!

OK, my polluted mind says this:

The Packers are on a roll. But probably won't beat KC this weekend. Not just Love, but the whole team is playing better. Less penalties, dropped passes, mistakes and what ever. Everyone is just playing better.

After this KC game, five games against teams they can beat and no excellent veteran QB's. l Just want for Christmas is an attacking defense like the one against the Rams. No more bend but don't break from Barry. I just think that the players will play better and have more confidence against these 5 marginal teams if they can be aggressive like the Rams game. Going 5-0 against these teams will secure a playoff bid.

Is it possible? Yes. Will Lafleur take the risk and force Barry to do it? I don't know. Let's hope so.

I love this post! I am glad I am not the only one with steps considered down to the second

We are typically en-route from weekend hunts for the Sunday games. Roll in on 2 wheels with Wayne and Larry blaring. Next, the garage stereo is turned on at volume. At the first commercial, I run in and turn on ALL of the televisions (this is WHY we have a TV in the bathroom). At commercial breaks we unload hunting gear. If we are lucky we can wrap it up, start a load of hunting wash at halftime and take in the rest of the game

Family already knows I’m nuts This was simple. We weren’t starting the 30 minute drive to my in laws until the Packers game was over. Once things were in hand I loaded the car dutifully with the food and wine (not my idea). Once the game finished…gone. Glorious ride listening to the postgame of a great Packers victory. I expected to be depressed and this made it so much sweeter. The cherry on top is dreaming of a better looking future. Good times.

That was a series of bold moves on your part, Al; could have cost the Packers the game. Did you have any thoughts about not changing anything you were doing (or wearing) lest you jinx the Packers? You know, "where's Al?" "Oh, he decided to stay home, guzzle wine, and feast on mashed potatoes, sweet potato casserole and broccoli rabe. He'll be here later."

A great Thanksgiving spent in Oostburg, WI. Looking out at Lake Michigan, doing a few chores to pass the time until kickoff, still basking in the glow of watching the Chargers game at Lambeau. Watching the game with my boy (who’s been in the Peace Corps in the DR for two years) and my 15 year old nephew. Then a victory and stuffing my face. Doesn’t get better.

Great Story Al.

I thought the Packers had a chance in this game. That was until the injury report came out. Then I just was hoping to show improvements. I was anticipating them to come out fairly flat like many games and end up scoring around 17 points and allowing the Lions to score around 20 points. That was my thought going into the game.

And then on the first play of the game Love hits Watson on the Bomb.
And then he hits Reed for the TD.
But then they give up the TD to the Lions. But they miss the extra point.
BUT then the following drive Love hits Heath for 16 yards. And then on 3rd and 8 he hits Watson for 9. Then Dillon catches one for 11, and Reed for 15, and then Watson for 8. We get to 3rd and 1, and lined up like we are going to throw our hammer Dillon up the middle but no its a play fake to a wide open Kraft for an easy TD.
Then we have the Gary caused fumble for a TD. and all of a sudden we are up 20-6 in the first quarter.

I don't remember a game being that exciting to start a game in a while. It was definitely a pleasant surprise.

But here is my question. Should it have been a surprise or were we not paying attention?

The previous few games Love has looked more and more comfortable. How many times have we said that was his best game so far. And Love was great in the Lions game. Still stuff to work on but he was really good. The young WR's have been emerging more and more the last few games. Sure we were without Wicks, and we had some injuries, but it shouldn't have come as a huge surprise that they showed up big. Also while the RB position was a mess, the OL was not. The last time we played the Lions we had Newman starting, Walker was playing his 2nd game, Tom was playing hurt. This game the OL shut down the Lions attack.

Also besides GB, I had my doubts about the Lions. They are a good team, i just question how good they really are. They barely beat the Bears last week and go annihilated by the Ravens. Good teams usually don't get beat like that.

What a great game though! We couldn't have asked for a better Thanksgiving this year!

I had surgery the day before Thanksgiving, so traveling was out of the question. Watching the game was the only item on the agenda for the day. I figured it wouldn’t be good to get too worked up about the game; i told myself whatever happens happens. Fortunately the Packers had the Lions on their heels from the opening kickoff and watching the game was simply pleasant.

It was our turn to host Thanksgiving this year. So with the grandchildren in the house things were a bit hectic. I was in and out of the game with the sound off. I taped it as usual for a complete watch and review early on Friday AM while our stay over guests were still asleep. In any case I managed to catch most of the Packers big plays live and I was aware throughout the afternoon that the Packers were getting the better of the play and that they never lost the lead for the entire game. The Packers victory just added to what was already a great holiday with the family.

Great story AL and congratulations on all your efforts and planning working out to enable you to see the entire game. It was well worth it. Thanks, Since '61

Really curious to see mood swing on CHTV and comment section next week after the Chiefs game.
After the Steelers loss many were talking about tanking.
After the win against the Chargers, we were just lucky. Chargers gave us the win.
After beating the Lions, the sun did come up. There is hope and where do I order my playoff tickets.

My wife and I watched the packer/lion game. I tend to get a bit pessimistic going into a game as I am guarding against the Packers losing and that when that happens, I get so disappointed. So this year my mantra was/is 'just show improvement' and hopefully exciting as well.

I have not been disappointed this year at all. They are so fun to watch.

I expect them to lose the KC game this coming Sunday but I want them to show continued improvement. Hopefully they win but if not, I don't want to be disappointed.

Many of us are hoping that Love is 'the guy'. I like to see his continued improvement and there are others that now think he is the qb of the future for us. Others do not think he is our future qb.

I am trending to conclude that he is our qb of the future. I believe the FO/coaches believe he is the real deal and I am so happy about that.

I read where, I believe his name is Dan Orlovsky from ESPN, believes he is our qb of the future. He does point out that there are some things that he needs to work on but according to him, these are fixable.

All signs are pointing up for him and that is a good thing. So now we just need to see continued improvement. He may regress a bit at times but overall he has shown improvement.

Was anyone else yelling at the TV at the end of the first half for GB to try a Free Kick instead of running a play?
It would have only been a 66 yd try.

The Packers Paul Hornung made a free kick in a 1964 game against the Bears with seconds remaining in the first half. Elijah Pitts made a fair catch of a punt on the Green Bay 48 and the Packers then lined up for a free kick from placement (similar to a kickoff alignment) and Hornung booted the ball 52 yards for 3 points on the final play of the half. That was a pretty hefty poke back in those day for a straight on kicker.

Al, Great story! Glad you took good care of the wine. Unlike you I recorded the first half and was shocked when I saw the halftime score. The Lions last TD was meaningless, they were beaten like a rented mule. Sort of what they did to the Packers in the first game.
I hope people don't let their expectations go wild after that win. Hope they continue on this arc of consistency and kick a few more team's behinds.
