The Packers head to Detroit with their season hanging in the balance after a four-game losing streak, the team’s worst run under head coach Matt LaFleur.

Green Bay must win on Sunday to keep their playoff hopes alive, but they have repeatedly made hard work of beating Detroit at Ford Field in recent years. Here are five things to watch as the Packers attempt to ignite their season versus the Lions:

Darnell Savage’s role

To put it mildly, former first-round pick Savage has struggled in Joe Barry’s defense. The once-promising safety has become a shell of himself and put out some of his ugliest tape against Buffalo last week.

There have been calls for Savage to be played as a nickel corner, and Barry believes he’d be “unbelievable” in that role, so… why not give it a try?

Rudy Ford has been serviceable when thrust into action at the safety spot, and Savage’s play has been so poor that the Packers have to do something to try and get production out of the man they’re paying nearly $8million guaranteed next year.

Quay Walker’s big test

De’Vondre Campbell has been ruled out of this weekend’s game, which will leave Quay Walker to handle communication responsibilities in Green Bay’s defense.

An All-Pro last season, Campbell hasn’t been as effective in 2022, but his veteran leadership will still be missed.

Walker is clearly still learning in his rookie year, and his instincts are very inconsistent at present. There could be issues with communication which will have to be overcome on Sunday to prevent the Lions taking advantage with big plays.

Can Green Bay’s offense break out?

The Packers showed glimpses of a successful formula against the Bills, featuring plenty of Aaron Jones and complemented by an Aaron Rodgers performance which looked much more like the MVP version.

Facing one of the worst defenses in the NFL this week, the Packers have a chance to finally put together a complete game on offense, although that could be made more difficult if David Bakhtiari and Elgton Jenkins, both questionable, can’t go.

Green Bay is yet to put up 30 points in a game this season, could this be the week?

Will Samori Toure get more snaps?

Toure scored his first NFL touchdown versus the Bills, making an impressive route adjustment to get behind Buffalo’s defense.

Aaron Rodgers sang Toure’s praises this week and discussed the development of the man he previously referred to as ‘Captain Casual’ due to his practice habits.

With the status of Allen Lazard and Christian Watson still up in the air, Toure could be in line for a bigger role in the offense this week.

Jamaal Williams

Because you should just always be watching Jamaal Williams.

The former Packer was a fan favourite in the green and gold due to his hard running style and his unmatched energy, and it has been great to see him get more national attention in Detroit.

With D’Andre Swift questionable to play on Sunday, the Packers may see a healthy dose of Williams, and they will have their work cut out to bring him down.
