5 Things to Watch in Packers vs Lions: More Snaps for Toure?

Five things to watch as the Packers head to Detroit with their season on the line.

The Packers head to Detroit with their season hanging in the balance after a four-game losing streak, the team’s worst run under head coach Matt LaFleur.

Green Bay must win on Sunday to keep their playoff hopes alive, but they have repeatedly made hard work of beating Detroit at Ford Field in recent years. Here are five things to watch as the Packers attempt to ignite their season versus the Lions:

Darnell Savage’s role

To put it mildly, former first-round pick Savage has struggled in Joe Barry’s defense. The once-promising safety has become a shell of himself and put out some of his ugliest tape against Buffalo last week.

There have been calls for Savage to be played as a nickel corner, and Barry believes he’d be “unbelievable” in that role, so… why not give it a try?

Rudy Ford has been serviceable when thrust into action at the safety spot, and Savage’s play has been so poor that the Packers have to do something to try and get production out of the man they’re paying nearly $8million guaranteed next year.

Quay Walker’s big test

De’Vondre Campbell has been ruled out of this weekend’s game, which will leave Quay Walker to handle communication responsibilities in Green Bay’s defense.

An All-Pro last season, Campbell hasn’t been as effective in 2022, but his veteran leadership will still be missed.

Walker is clearly still learning in his rookie year, and his instincts are very inconsistent at present. There could be issues with communication which will have to be overcome on Sunday to prevent the Lions taking advantage with big plays.

Can Green Bay’s offense break out?

The Packers showed glimpses of a successful formula against the Bills, featuring plenty of Aaron Jones and complemented by an Aaron Rodgers performance which looked much more like the MVP version.

Facing one of the worst defenses in the NFL this week, the Packers have a chance to finally put together a complete game on offense, although that could be made more difficult if David Bakhtiari and Elgton Jenkins, both questionable, can’t go.

Green Bay is yet to put up 30 points in a game this season, could this be the week?

Will Samori Toure get more snaps?

Toure scored his first NFL touchdown versus the Bills, making an impressive route adjustment to get behind Buffalo’s defense.

Aaron Rodgers sang Toure’s praises this week and discussed the development of the man he previously referred to as ‘Captain Casual’ due to his practice habits.

With the status of Allen Lazard and Christian Watson still up in the air, Toure could be in line for a bigger role in the offense this week.

Jamaal Williams

Because you should just always be watching Jamaal Williams.

The former Packer was a fan favourite in the green and gold due to his hard running style and his unmatched energy, and it has been great to see him get more national attention in Detroit.

With D’Andre Swift questionable to play on Sunday, the Packers may see a healthy dose of Williams, and they will have their work cut out to bring him down.

Definitely more snaps for Toure, please.

Given what he showed in preseason, I'm mystified as to why so few snaps to date -- especially given the need for someone to stretch the field.

IMO he's more than a one play wonder, and will have a solid NFL career -- starting last game.

I'm also excited about Toure, but I'll go even further in saying I'd like to see some targets for Amari Rodgers.
Amari gets beaten up by the fans here at CHTV, it seems, but I think he's shown some promise this season.
Before we give up on the guy, let's see him out there on the field getting a real opportunity.

Yes to more Amari....let's see what he is made of. Also very curious about both Goodson & Hill and whether they have a skill set in the slot. Think there is a fair amount of talent is creative and used properly to maximize their talents.

I agree halfway; He's not our long-term returner, but I would like to see him given more opprotunities in the passing game

I'm a Huskers fan, and Toure was incredible for us in 2021. He should become more involved; he deserves it.

I agree. As a Hawkeyes/Badger fan (in that order) Toure popped off the TV screen. I was more than happy seeing the Packers pick him up in the 7th round.

The team has no shot of making the playoffs. But by some miracle they do they won't go anywhere. Play the young guys and play Love. See who has what ability's and start to look toward the future.

So, the Packers established a dynamic running game against the Bills, which seemed to open things up for Aaron Rodgers to look more like his MVP form in the passing game.
Hmmm . . .

I have no confidence in this staff. I can’t see them winning at Detroit. They’re soft, MLF is soft and confused. First things that goes wrong they fold. They are the laughing stock of the NFL. The lack of heart is very disappointing.
It should also be noted there are some not so great players making top salaries on the team. A direct reflection on the front office.
Very tough to watch this team.

We were not really spoiled. We were let down by this front office and staff repeatedly .
MLF came from nowhere and was a pleasant surprise in 2019 putting up a good record..
All downhill since. The GM never added impact players, a bunch of position coaches used as DC’s.. suffering through an entire year of Mo Drayton in 21… terrible draft picks like Amari Rodgers..
all culminating in choking as the# 1 seed in back to back fashion..
then to come into 2022 touting your defense is truly amazing. While they don’t usually give up a to of points, they get steamrolled when the need to make a stand… every time.
They won a bunch of one score games with an old QB on a magical run.
That run is over, and MLF is on his own and looking not so much like the guy that won 40 in three years.
Clean house! Murphy- Gutey- MLF.. gone!
The executive committee needs to start looking now!!!

Five things? OK.
1. The Lions are going to come roaring out of the tunnel, and will be looking to physically dominate the Packers. Will the Packers respond or wilt
2. Expect the Packers to try to take advantage of Detroit's bad secondary. In short, back Rodgers holding the ball longer, waiting for his receivers to get some separation. The running game could once again become an afterthought.
3. The Lions offense is going to try running the ball to set up the pass. And with Quay Walker apparently being the one to set up the defense on the field, expect there to be some confusion at times. Unless the Packers can break loose and score at least 30 points, this could be a long afternoon.
4. Expect the Packers defense to once again play flabby defense, and that there will be Lion receivers running open on a regular basis.
5. Don't expect any adjustments during the game to the offense or defense if they're not working for the Packers. Instead, keep doing the same thing, and hope for different results. Because that is this team's recent modus operandi. It's as if Mike McCarthy's spirit during the last couple years of his tenure has come to inhabit LaFleur, who seems to be totally clueless as to what to do.

lets hope this isn't one of Goff's better games..he is hot and cold, mostly cold..he'll make bad throws lets hope the secondary can actually catch some of them for a change..
